Halloween Costume: Zenon Girl of the 21st Century

For Halloween this year I went as a classic throwback, Zenon from the 1999 Disney Channel original movie Zenon Girl of the 21st Century. A moderately easy costume to recreate, I made the blue vest featuring a metallic cap sleeve and a matching skirt as well as a hot pink long sleeve spandex turtleneck shirt. I also made matching metallic scrunchies for her ace half up half down high pigtail hairdo. And the outfit isn't complete without the disk earring which I bought online. If only I had saved my platform sketchers from 7th grade I would have been in business.

Bee + Puppycat Halloween

The best time of the year is here, Halloween.  Where you can dress up like complete and total nonsense and you don't get a second look.  When you are encouraged to make your own clothes and don't get a face of disapproval from your buds when they come out looking awful (hey, you tried).

This year I did costumes for Bee and Puppycat, a new AMAZING cartoon series by Natasha Allegri that is super good and hilarious and you should check it out!  She had a Kickstarter to raise money to make more episodes which I obviously backed (edit: which she knocked out of the park).  She also is a crew member on Adventure Time so she already earned all the awesome points.

Here are Bee (the girl) and Puppycat (the puppy/cat) in a scene from the 1st episode:

For Puppycat I made a super cozy face hat out of sweatshirt fleece and used felt for the eyes, eyebrows, and nose.  The mouth I machine embroidered, thank you zig zag stitch!  and the collar thing was like a weird mini airplane neck pillow (those things are the worst) with a velcro closure stuffed with polyfil and a felt bell.

Yay!

Here's a work in progress photo of the bee on Bee's sweatshirt I made out of felt:

The finished sweatshirt, made from scratch.  I tried to find the right color sweatshirt online and was just going to make the bee but no one had it, not even American Apparel.  Ridiculous, so I made it myself.

(I actually had both tones of yellow sweatshirt fleece/rib knit in my inventory)
If that's not destiny I don't know what is!

Now in progress photos of my Puppycat Hat:

Done!  On my fantastic model:

Onto next Halloween!!

Mini 5 Panel Cat Hat

I made a miniature 5 panel hat a while ago as a part of a plush for a show at Gallery 1988.  See the post here.  One day I was feeling very excited about a new fabric print I ordered and decided to make another mini hat and I found out that Teeny cat is a fantastic hat model!!  Once I posted a photo on instagram it was clear that everyone wants a tiny 5 panel for their cat!  I made a listing on Etsy so now everyone can adorn their pet with a tiny hat or ladies, rock this mini hat by attaching it with some bobby pins!

Photoshoot!

Kid Vid Halloween

This year for Halloween I was Kid Vid from the 1989 Burger King Kid's Club.  For those of you who don't remember or weren't alive when they were around, Kid Vid was the leader of the Burger King Kids Club Gang and he was really into video games and technology which you can tell by the giant phone/video game he carries on his belt.

The Burger King Kids Club Gang was a politically correct multi-ethnic group of fictional characters including Kid Vid, Boomer: a sports loving tomboy, IQ: a nerd with red hair and freckles, Jaws: a tall african american with a big appetite, JD: the dog and the group's mascot, Lingo: a multilingual hispanic dude who was into art, Snaps: a camera loving gal, Wheels: a paraplegic guy in a wheelchair, and Jazz: an asian girl who loved music who was added in 2000.

Here are some of the action figures from the kids meals

I made most of Kid Vid's accessories including the leg pouch, glasses, knee pad, and phone/video game player.  I cut the lightning bolts for his shirt out of felt and sewed them on.  For his belt and cross body strap I sewed red fabric into a strip and attached a buckle.  I already had a yellow watch, the red hat, and really similar shoes to his.

The phone was the most fun and most ridiculous to make since it was supposed to be some kind of cool phone in the late 80s and it is giant!  I made it life size based on how big it looked next to Kid Vid which is completely ridiculous.

Close-up:

Even Closer:

For Kid Vid's glasses I used some giant awesome blue sunglasses and taped off the lighting bolt shapes and painted it with acrylic.  They look pretty sweet but you can't see out of them at all which is unfortunate because I would wear them all the time.

 Process photo!!

Finished!!!  Gotta start planning for next Halloween now!

Pokemon Costume Party

Recently me and Axel were invited to a Pokemon birthday party for our friend Iain.  It was my specialty, a dress up party.  I didn't really watch Pokemon as a kid so I didn't know much about what character to choose.  Luckily Axel is a Pokemon nerd and decided that the best costume duo for us was Misty (me) and Togepi (Axel).  My costume was pretty easy and comprised of things I already had in my wardrobe.  There is no image because it wasn't even photo worthy.  Togepi was a little trickier but I'm always up for a costume challenge.

It was a pretty simple egg shape with red and blue shapes on the outside.  I made the top pointy like a half an eggshell and stuffed the egg body with stuffing to make it poofy and egg like.

The costume was not complete without a Togepi head piece with an elastic band.

I made arm holes on the sides to help hold the costume up and also obviously so he could use his arms.  It is a party after all.

There was a prize for different categories of best costume.  We won most accurate costume and the best possible prize (sarcasm) a bottle of Jameson.  Clearly I'm not a fan, lucky for Axel.

At the party with other various Pokemon/costumes
Good times.  Now Axel doesn't have an excuse next Halloween for not having a costume. Whee!
